This week, we've been working on:
Reading/Writing
Attention grabbing Sentences...
We've been discussing what makes a sentence/paragraph/story interesting, and have been looking at different ways to write a sentence that grabs the reader's attention from the start...
The homework is based on these ideas...
The kids should attempt to complete this project in 30 to 40 minute blocks... if they save it until the last minute, the quality will not reach expectations...

Attention Grabbing Homework!
Goal:
To find ags in popular literature and understand what makes an ags.
I.)
Find four or more books/magazines, in English, around
your home… Make
sure they are each within a different genre…
List the books and genres
here:

II.)
Flip through each and look for 3
attention
grabbing sentences per
book.
Hint:
·
The first sentence of the
book is always a good place to start.
·
The first sentence of each
chapter works, too.
·
BUT, look for ags
within the text as well:
*when a new character or
setting is introduced
*when action happens
*when a problem arises or is
solved

Write what you found here:

each grabbed your attention.

(see attached PP slide on the blog)
Have fun… well, as much fun as you can have
with homework…
DO NOT save this for the last minute, all in
one go! You will go CRAZY!
Take about 40 minutes each time, until it’s
done.
MATH
The class has taken a diagnostic math test in order to determine what areas need reteaching/support lessons...
Those who may need extra support will join a small math group in which Anders will guide them through areas of difficulty.
I have been designing problem situations/word problems that enrich the areas in which I've seen problems... at the moment we're dealing with fractions. here's the homework:
Please set these questions out neatly on
the graph paper. Start with the total at the top and record how much is spent
for each item below this.
1. Andy’s having a party and he has 2000kr
to spend on it. He spends ¼ on sweets, and ½ on drinks. How much money
does he have left to spend on decorations?
2. Susie has 15,000 in wages. She
spends 1/3 on her rent and 1/3 on her bills. How much does she have left to
spend on clothes shopping?
3.
Algie gets 50kr in pocket money
per week. If he spends 2/5 of it on sweets and 3/10 of it on toys and saves the
rest, how much will he have saved after 4 weeks?
Fraction Problems 2
Please set these questions out neatly on
the graph paper. Start with the total at the top and record how much is spent
for each item below this.
1. A firm earns 1000kr profit every
day. ¾ of their profit comes from selling computers, and 1/8 of their profit
comes from selling phones. How much money do they make from selling everything
else?
2. I have 250kr. If I spend
2/5 of that money on going to watch football, and 2/10 on drinking tea, how
much do I have left for buying take away Chinese?
3. Baby has £60 in his nappy. If he
spends ¼ of his money on milk and 2/6 of his money on baby food and £10 on
having his hair cut and blow dried, how much money does he have left to spend
on buying a toy train set?
Fraction and Proportion Problems
3
Please set these questions out neatly on
the graph paper. Start with the total at the top and record how much is spent
for each item below this.
1. A train is
speeding down the tracks! It’s 8 cars long, measuring a total of 200 meters! If
it crashed, it would be terrible, but not as terrible as it would be if it were
12 cars long! How many meters long would it be if it there were 12 cars?
2. A robotic
telescopic death arm has 6 equal parts, and the total length of the arm when
extended is 100cm. How long would the death arm be if there were 9 equal parts?
3. Try this:
6x + 3= 15
x=?
3y + 2x= 12
If y = 2
x = ?
HARD: 4a – 3b = 5. What can “a” equal? What can “b”
equal?
RELIGION
Buddhism Unit, continuing. Watching "Little Buddha" by Bertolucci, and answering the following questions, in class:
Name:
Little
Buddha
This film weaves together two stories: the story of the
life of Siddhartha, who becomes the Buddha, and the story of the search for a
Tibetan Buddhist lama, or spiritual
leader. As you watch the film, please take notes on the following questions.
1.
Where
does this movie take place? (There are at least three important settings.)
2. Why does Lama Norbu go looking
for Jesse?
3. Why do you think that Jesse's
father is suspicious about Lama Norbu when he arrives at the
house?
4.
What makes Jesse's father change his mind
about Lama Norbu?
5. Why do you think that Jesse likes
Lama Norbu and wants to hear the story of Prince
Siddhartha?
6.
What
is Siddhartha’s early life like at the palace?
7.
Why
does Siddhartha’s father, the king, want to protect him from the outside world?
8.
Was Prince
Siddhartha's father right not to show him the bad aspects of life?
9.
What
ultimately convinces Siddhartha to leave the palace walls?
10. What four encounters change
Siddhartha’s understanding of the world? How does the movie portray these
experiences?
11. What kind of life does
Siddhartha lead after he leaves the palace? Why?
12. What does the Buddha teach
about the right path (dharma) in
life?
13. Think about the portrayals
of the Dharma Center
(the center where the Tibetan Buddhist lamas live in Seattle ) in the movie. What is the sangha (community of monks) like?
14. List some instances in the
movie that portray the sacred rites/rituals of the monks. What do they do?
15. What happens at the end of
the Buddha’s life?
16. How has Jesse and his family changed at the end of the film? What do you
