We took our "Chapter 4 Diagnostic Test" yesterday on multiplication and division, and some are still very unsure as to how to calculate "written mental" multiplication with mellanled, ex:
4 x 67 = 240 + 28 = 268
3 x 637 = 1800 + 90 + 21= 1911
They need practice, practice practice! I have sent home, to some, a pretty substantial math exercise packet (7 pages) for such practice... Now, this is not meant as a punishment or to stress them out... I've asked that they take their time and do what they can... I would like it to be finished by next Friday... which means I would like them to try and take it to and from school, so they have ample time.
IMPORTANT PROJECT UPDATE:
I'm sure you may have heard we are working on a very complex, time consuming writing project titled "Revolting Rhymes", based on Roald Dahl's work of the same name.
The project was broken down into 6 sections:
1.) Reviewing Roald Dahl's writing style and processing his "Revolting Rhyme" poems...
2.) Learning and practicing simple rhyming patterns...
3.) Brainstorming about our own "Revolting Rhyme", taking a fairy tale and twisting the ending to make it surprising or gross or... revolting!
4.) Writing a "plotline guide" to keep us on track...
5.) Following the plotline guide as we write a full, rhyming poem, with sensible beginning, middle, climax, end, in final draft form...
6.) Illustrating the beginning, middle, climax, end in comic book form
Now, it's taken a very long time, but these are slowly being completeled, and are quite good, actually!
I have offered extra "study time" with me after school next week to complete these, as it's been working well so far in class (we call it "the chopping block"... your child can tell you what that means ;) )... but we simply do not have any more class time to do it!
We've all agreed that if these aren't finished by sportlöv, the kids will take them home to try and finish. Hope this sounds good.
Thanks!
Andy
