Development Talk Preparation

Today and tomorrow will be devoted solely to organizing and prepapring our Development Talks...

This time, the kids are going to lead it solo...

They're comparing their work and projects to the current goals...

And are writing a "speech" (taking notes on the following topics/questions), complete with examples from the work, which they will "perform" for you at the talk.

Here are the guidelines...if you're interested in having your child explain this, that would be great! Extra practice!



Development Talk Preparation
Spring, 2014; 5B

·        You will go through each section and assignment and prepare your Red Folder in this order.
·        You will also answer the questions in a “notecard” fashion, explain yourself, and be ready to point to examples from your work.
·        You will then practice your “speech” with a partner

Writing

1.)  Literary Devices: Metaphor, Simile, and Personification.

a.)  Briefly explain your “symbolism” writing…
-why were we asked to write about these symbols?
- What were we trying to show?
-Did you follow your writing goals? In what way?
-Did you use PEEL (or at least P,E,E)? Example?

b.) Explain the idea behind metaphor, simile, personification

c.)   Briefly explain your “Metaphor Picture Poem”

-What did we have to do? What were the goals?
-What devices did we have to use?
-Do you think you reached the goals for this poem? In what way? Explain and examples.
-What could you improve upon?

2.)  “The Road Not Taken” Questions

a.)  Explain the poem. What’s it about? What are the metaphors?

b.) Go through the questions I gave, and your answers.

-Explain your answers.
- Did you follow the directions?
- Did you reach the goals?
      - Give examples and explain how you reached the goals, if you think you did.
-What could you improve upon?

3.)  Attention Grabbing Sentences

a.)  Explain what attention grabbing sentences are.

-Where should you use them?
-How are they constructed?
-Why is Theme, Genre, and Effect important for AGS?

b.) Attention Grabbing Homework
-Explain the goals for this homework. Did you reach them?
-Can you point to examples that really show your understanding of AGS?

c.)   The Enigma of William Tell” Story and “My Dream with AGS”
-Explain the point of these stories
-What are your Narrative Writing Goals (use the Narrative Text goals to help you ;) that you should have used for these stories?
-Did you follow/reach these goals?
-Did you use ags in this story? Give examples.

d.)  “My Dream with AGS” Partner Review
-Describe what we did for this Partner Review
-What is TAG? Did you do it?
-Why do we partner review?
-Were you able to provide your partner with valuable tips? How? Examples.

4.)  Narrative Story and Plotline Guide

a.)  “What Not To Write and Goals”
-This is the most important part of your Writing IUP, as it outlines all the Narrative Writing Goals.
-So, make sure you’re able to go through the goals and explain each one.
-Give examples of how to reach each of these goals
-Describe our “What Not To Write” project. Why do we do this?
-Go through your “Setting Description of Troll Mountain” and “Character Description of Appearances and Thoughts”. What goals were you aiming for when you wrote these? Did you reach these goals?

            b.)Explain and give examples of “Passive Voice”

c.)    Go through your “Plotline Guide” and be able to explain each part and how your story will reach the Narrative Writing Goals

Reading

1.)  Your Reading Log

-Choose 3 of the best Reading Log entries you have written and explain each.
-Be able to describe your reading habits and books you enjoy
-What are your Reading Goals? (See the “How To Get an “A” slide)
-Are you reaching these goals? Explain/examples

Math

1.)  National Test Practice

a.)  Explain this test.
b.) Quickly go through your test to find areas in which you did well, areas that you are proud of and/or are sure of.
c.)   Go through your mistakes and describe how you would solve these properly.
d.) Go through the partner corrections and explain how you and your partner worked together to find the best solutions

2.)  Room Measurement Project and Self Made Test
a.)  Describe the project, pointing out the details and goals.

b.) Describe the Test Questions, pointing out the details and goals (see the PowerPoint slide for help)


3.)  Fraction Problems Homework Peer Corrections

a.)  What were you and your partner supposed to do together?
-Were you able to come up with solutions you agreed on?
-Look at your mistakes. Do you now know how to solve them? Explain and examples.

4.)  Räknemetod (Calculations) Self Evaluation
a.)  Explain each equation and how you solved it.
-Did you solve it correctly? How?
-If not, do you know what you did wrong? Explain, examples.

5.)  Red Math Book and Diagnostics

a.)  Find a section of the Red Math Book that shows examples of:
-         Probability
-         Borrowing Over 0’s
-         Area/Perimeter
-         Fractions
-         Decimals
Explain each.

b.) Organize any Diagnostic Tests you’ve done and be able to point out and explain what you’ve done correctly and incorrectly.
Religion

1.)  Hinduism
a.)  Be able to discuss the Hinduism Key Fact sheet, showing your knowledge of the most important parts of this religion
b.) Review the Hinduism Homework… Did you follow and reach your writing goals? How? Examples.
2.)  Buddhism

a.)  Be able to discuss the Hinduism Key Fact sheet, showing your knowledge of the most important parts of this religion
b.) What is “Little Buddha”? Explain the question sheet. Are you providing full sentences, description, examples?
c.)   Explain the “Buddhism Slide Show” questions and answers.
- Are you providing full sentences, description, examples?
-Are you able to explain why “salvation” is important for many religions? What could you improve upon?
d.) Buddhism Homework: Story. Did you follow and reach your Writing Goals? PEEL? Explain and examples. What could you improve upon?
Art

1.)  Buddha Drawing
-What were the goals and requirements for this drawing? What were we supposed to do? Not do?

2.)  3D Shapes
-What were the goals and requirements for this drawing? What were we supposed to do? Not do?
